Project scopeF-Gas Refrigeration Decommissioning

Location: Homerton, London   Status: Completed

ComGas completed the safe decommissioning of two refrigeration systems serving mortuary Cold Rooms 1 and 2 at Homerton University Hospital in London.

The work included controlled refrigerant recovery, electrical isolation, removal of refrigerant pipework and power supplies, and the removal and disposal of the indoor blower coils and associated tank pumps.

The project was completed with both systems fully decommissioned and no further works required.

Existing refrigeration systems

The two cold rooms were served by separate refrigeration systems comprising indoor blower-coil units, outdoor condensers, controls, refrigerant pipework, electrical supplies and associated equipment.

Before removal commenced, the systems and their connected services were identified so that the refrigeration and electrical components could be safely isolated and decommissioned.

Inspection of the existing equipment also revealed substantial ice accumulation within one of the blower-coil assemblies.

Controlled refrigerant recovery

Refrigerant was safely recovered from both systems as part of the F-Gas decommissioning process.

  • System 1: 1.040 kg of refrigerant recovered
  • System 2: 4.77 kg of refrigerant recovered
  • Total recovered: 5.81 kg

Completing the refrigerant recovery before dismantling allowed the remaining equipment and services to be disconnected and removed safely.

Electrical isolation and disconnection

All electrical supplies serving the two refrigeration systems were isolated and disconnected.

This included the connections to the indoor blower coils, outdoor condenser units, cold-room controls and associated equipment. Redundant power supply cables were then removed as part of the wider decommissioning works.

Pipework and equipment removal

Following refrigerant recovery and electrical isolation, the redundant refrigeration services were removed.

The works included:

  • Removal of refrigerant pipework from the ceiling voids
  • Removal of associated pipework brackets and supports
  • Removal of redundant power supply cables
  • Removal of the indoor blower-coil units
  • Removal of the associated tank pumps
  • Disposal of the specified redundant indoor equipment

The decommissioned equipment was carefully removed from the working areas and grouped during the removal process.

Technical summary

  • Two refrigeration systems decommissioned
  • Systems previously served mortuary Cold Rooms 1 and 2
  • 1.040 kg of refrigerant recovered from System 1
  • 4.77 kg of refrigerant recovered from System 2
  • Electrical supplies safely isolated and disconnected
  • Indoor and outdoor refrigeration equipment disconnected
  • Redundant refrigerant pipework removed from ceiling voids
  • Pipework brackets and electrical supply cables removed
  • Indoor blower coils and tank pumps removed and disposed of
  • No further works required

Project completion

Both refrigeration systems were left safely decommissioned, with the specified redundant services and indoor equipment removed.

The completed work provided the hospital with a clear conclusion to the decommissioning programme, with no further works required from ComGas.
