ComGas installs, converts and services LPG heating systems for off-mains homes across Farnham, Guildford and the surrounding area. Boilers are commissioned specifically for LPG, tank and cylinder supply arrangements are sited correctly, and we'll talk through LPG, oil and heat pump options honestly rather than push one as universally best.
LPG works like natural gas at the boiler, but the supply and pipework are genuinely different.
For a home without a mains gas connection, LPG offers boiler-like heating and hot water performance — similar controls, similar servicing, similar appliance choice to natural gas. What's different is everything upstream of the boiler: how the gas is stored and supplied, how the pipework is sized and routed, and the safety considerations that come with a heavier-than-air gas.
We commission LPG boilers and conversions specifically for LPG rather than treating it as a drop-in alternative to natural gas, and we size and site tank or cylinder supply correctly from the outset. If you're weighing up LPG against oil or a heat pump for an off-mains property, we'll talk through the practical differences for your specific house rather than default to one option.

How we approach LPG heating
Boilers, supply, safety and servicing — all specific to LPG.
LPG systems are installed, converted and serviced by engineers registered specifically for LPG, with supply and pipework sized correctly for the gas and the property.
LPG Boilers and Conversions
LPG boilers are broadly similar to natural gas boilers in appearance and control, but they're set up and commissioned specifically for LPG, not simply supplied with a different gas.
LPG boilers use different injectors and regulator settings, and are combustion-analysed specifically for LPG during commissioning
Converting an existing natural gas boiler to LPG (or the reverse) needs a proper manufacturer conversion kit and full re-commissioning, not just a regulator swap
LPG has a higher calorific value than natural gas, so boiler setup — not just pipe sizing — has to be correct for it to run safely and efficiently
Appliance choice for LPG is generally as wide as for natural gas, provided the specific model is available in an LPG variant
LPG can be supplied from a bulk tank or from cylinders, and the right choice depends on usage, available space and how the property is laid out.
Bulk tanks (typically 1,200 litres or more) are sited outside at a set distance from the property and boundary, refilled by the supplier on a scheduled or on-demand basis
Cylinder supply, usually paired cylinders with an automatic changeover regulator, suits lower usage or where a bulk tank isn't practical
Tank or cylinder siting has to satisfy separation distances from boundaries, drains, and openings such as windows and doors
The supply contract — tank ownership or lease, minimum order quantities — sits with the LPG supplier; we advise on the pipework and siting implications
LPG behaves differently to natural gas in a leak, which changes how pipework is routed and how the supply pressure is managed from tank or cylinder to appliance.
LPG is heavier than air and collects at low level if it leaks, so pipework routing, ventilation and any enclosed or below-ground runs are treated differently to natural gas
A two-stage regulator system — first stage at the tank or cylinder, second stage near the property — controls pressure down to what the appliances need
Pipework sizing accounts for the length of run from tank to property, often considerably longer than a typical mains gas connection
Work on LPG systems is carried out and certified by a Gas Safe registered engineer registered specifically for LPG
LPG appliances need the same routine servicing and landlord safety checks as natural gas ones, with the added consideration of tank or cylinder condition, and sit alongside oil and heat pumps as the realistic off-mains heating options.
Annual servicing and landlord gas safety checks (CP12) apply to LPG appliances in the same way as natural gas ones, with tank, cylinder and pipework condition also checked
Off-mains properties typically choose between LPG, oil and a heat pump, and the right answer depends on existing pipework, available space and how the property is used
LPG suits a household wanting boiler-like heating and hot water performance without a mains gas connection
We're happy to talk through the practical differences for your specific property rather than push one option as universally best
For an off-mains property, LPG, oil and a heat pump each suit a different set of circumstances.
None of the main off-mains heating options is universally better than the others — each suits a different combination of existing pipework, available space and how the household actually wants its heating and hot water to behave. LPG and oil both deliver boiler-like performance close to what a mains gas system provides, with the main practical difference being how the fuel is stored and supplied on site. A heat pump runs on electricity rather than a delivered fuel, but works best at a lower flow temperature, which usually means larger radiators or underfloor heating and good insulation to get the most from it.
The existing appliance stock and pipework in a property often decide which option is genuinely practical to move to, as much as any comparison of running costs. A house already piped for LPG or oil can convert to the other with a boiler and supply change; moving to a heat pump is a bigger step that touches the emitters as well as the heat source. We'll talk through what your specific property already has before recommending a direction.

If you're considering LPG for an off-mains property, or comparing it against oil or a heat pump, get in touch and we'll talk through the practical differences.
What's different about an LPG boiler compared to a natural gas boiler?
The boiler itself is set up differently — injectors, regulator settings and combustion are all specific to LPG, which has a higher calorific value than natural gas. The controls and general operation are similar to a natural gas boiler.
Can my existing gas boiler be converted to run on LPG?
Many boilers can be converted using a manufacturer-approved conversion kit, followed by full re-commissioning and combustion analysis specifically for LPG. Not every model has a conversion kit available, so this is checked against your specific boiler.
Do I need a bulk tank, or can I use cylinders?
It depends mainly on usage and available space. A bulk tank suits higher, more consistent consumption and reduces how often deliveries are needed; cylinders suit lower usage or properties without space for a tank.
How much space does an LPG tank need, and how close can it be to the house?
Bulk tanks need to sit a set distance from the property, the boundary and any openings such as windows or doors, with separation distances varying by tank size and site layout. We assess your specific site before confirming what's achievable.
Does an LPG boiler need servicing more often than a natural gas one?
No — the servicing interval is the same, typically annual. The service does include a check of tank, cylinder and pipework condition in addition to the boiler itself.
Do landlord gas safety checks (CP12) cover LPG appliances?
Yes, the same annual landlord gas safety check requirement applies to LPG appliances as to natural gas ones, with tank, cylinder and pipework condition also assessed as part of the visit.
Is LPG cheaper to run than oil?
It varies with fuel prices, property insulation and how the property is used, and we don't quote fixed running cost comparisons since they change over time. We can talk through the practical differences for your specific property rather than give a generic answer.
How do I decide between LPG, oil and a heat pump for an off-mains property?
It depends on your existing pipework and appliance stock, available space for tank or oil storage, and how ready the property is for a heat pump's lower flow temperature. We'll assess your specific situation before recommending a direction rather than defaulting to one option.
