The incoming electrical supply usually decides what is possible, not the charge point.

A commercial EV charging installation looks, on the surface, like a straightforward job of fixing units to a wall or a bollard and running cable to them. In practice the charge points themselves are the easy part. The question that actually determines what a scheme can achieve — how many bays, how fast, and over what timescale — is whether the building's incoming electrical supply has the spare capacity to support it, and if not, what the alternatives are.

Specify charge points before answering that question and you risk a scheme that cannot be energised as designed, an unplanned request to the local Distribution Network Operator with a lead time outside anyone's control, or a supply upgrade that makes the whole project uneconomic. Get the sequence right and there is often a way to deliver a workable number of bays now, using load management, with the containment and capacity in place to add more later without repeating the groundworks. This applies equally whether the driver is workplace charging for staff, a fleet depot, or charging offered to visitors and tenants.

How we approach a commercial EV charging installation

Assess the supply, confirm the use case, design distribution, install, then commission and certify.

We start with an assessment of the incoming supply and existing maximum demand, because this determines everything that follows. In parallel, we establish the use case — workplace charging for staff vehicles, fleet charging with defined return times, visitor charging with shorter dwell times, or tenant charging with individual billing — since each drives a different number of bays, charging speed and access control requirement.

Once the supply position and use case are confirmed, we design the distribution, containment and any load management required, sequence the groundworks around the operational site, and install and commission the charge points. Earthing arrangements and PEN fault protection are assessed as part of the design, since EV charging installations carry specific requirements under BS 7671 that a general electrical installation does not. Every installation is certified to BS 7671 on completion, with the paperwork and test results handed over as part of the scope.

What we consider before any EV charging installation

Spare supply capacity and car park access shape what a scheme can deliver.

Spare capacity on the incoming supply is usually the first constraint, and where it is insufficient we consider whether a DNO application for additional capacity is justified against the timescale it involves, or whether dynamic load balancing across the proposed bays can deliver a viable scheme without it. Car park layout, existing surfacing, cable routes and reinstatement, and how the site continues to operate during groundworks all shape the practical delivery of the scheme, alongside access control and any billing requirement for tenant or visitor use. Back-office systems for access control, RFID identification and usage billing are considered alongside the physical installation, since these determine how the charge points are actually managed once live, particularly where tenants or visitors are billed separately from staff.

Will our existing electrical supply need upgrading to add EV charging?

Not always. We assess spare capacity on the incoming supply first, and in many cases dynamic load balancing across the proposed charge points delivers a workable scheme without a supply upgrade. Where spare capacity genuinely is not there, we explain what a DNO application would involve before you commit to it.

Does adding EV charge points mean we need a new distribution board?

Often, yes. A new EV load frequently requires a dedicated way or a board upgrade to accommodate it safely, which we assess alongside the charging scheme itself. See our Distribution Boards page for that specific service if a board upgrade is the main driver.

Do you install domestic EV chargers?

When is DC rapid charging appropriate for a commercial site?

Rapid DC charging suits short-dwell locations such as fleet turnaround points, but it draws significantly more from the incoming supply than AC charging and is not usually appropriate for workplace or long-dwell parking. We assess this against your use case rather than assuming rapid charging is always the better option.

Should we install charging for every bay now, or plan for expansion?

That depends on your supply position and budget, but installing containment and spare capacity for future bays at first fix is far cheaper than returning to repeat groundworks later. We typically discuss a phased approach as part of the initial assessment.
