Gas testing, purging and decommissioning are controlled activities, not routine add-ons to a plumbing job. They may be needed for a new or altered installation, a suspected leak, a change of appliance, a vacant unit, redundant pipework, a plant-room project or a final isolation before demolition. The safe method depends on the pipework material and layout, volume, pressure, appliances, flues, ventilation, location, neighbouring systems and what must happen when the work is complete.

Provide the gas schematic, meter details, emergency control valve, pipe sizes and materials, regulators, branches, appliance list, flue information and photographs. Mark what is to remain live, be tested, be purged or be removed.
State whether the request concerns commissioning, alteration, suspected leakage, periodic verification, reinstatement or decommissioning. Include previous certificates, defect notices, pressure details, incident information and outstanding recommendations.
Identify every isolation point, interlinked system, landlord or utility interface and the person authorised to isolate, prove dead, reinstate and confirm the building is safe for use. Do not operate an unfamiliar valve on assumption.
Describe the proposed vent or discharge location, natural or mechanical ventilation, ignition sources, adjacent occupants, exclusion zone, gas detection, communication and emergency arrangements. The method must be suitable for the gas volume and site.

Agree the required test results, labels, photographs, isolation details, gas safety documentation, decommissioning confirmation, updated drawings and outstanding actions. Record what was not tested or could not be accessed.

Purging is the controlled removal or introduction of gas or air from pipework, and it has its own hazards and method requirements. The correct sequence depends on the installation and the purpose of the work.
It may be appropriate, but the system boundary, pipework volume, appliance isolation, ventilation, access and replacement method must be assessed first. The replacement contractor and responsible person should agree the isolation, test, reinstatement and handover requirements.
