Where appliances or pipework are no longer needed — ahead of a refurbishment, strip-out or change of use — ComGas safely purges, disconnects and caps redundant commercial gas installations, sequenced around your wider project programme across Surrey and surrounding counties.
Decommissioning is the gas-safety task within a wider refurbishment project.
When a building is being refurbished, stripped out or repurposed, gas appliances and pipework that are no longer required need to be safely taken out of service — purged, disconnected and capped so the redundant installation presents no ongoing risk. This is a specific gas-safety task, distinct from the wider refurbishment or fit-out project it usually sits within.
ComGas carries out gas decommissioning for commercial buildings across Surrey and surrounding counties, working around the sequencing of the broader project. Where the redundant installation is only part of a larger building being refurbished, we confirm exactly what is being decommissioned and what, if anything, remains in service, so nothing is disconnected in error.
ComGas Services UK Ltd Commercial gas decommissioning from Farnham, Surrey.
Gas decommissioning services
Safe removal of redundant appliances and pipework from service.
From a single redundant appliance to a full strip-out ahead of refurbishment, we scope decommissioning around what is actually being removed and what remains.
Appliance Decommissioning
Safely isolating and disconnecting individual gas appliances that are no longer required, capping the supply as appropriate.
Isolation and disconnection of redundant appliances
Capping of the supply to the removed appliance
Confirmation of remaining installation unaffected
Suitable for single-item or multi-appliance removals
Confirm the scope first, then purge, disconnect and cap.
Before any decommissioning work begins, we confirm exactly which appliances and pipework are being removed from service and which, if any, remain in use — particularly important where a building is only partially affected by a refurbishment. Once the scope is agreed, the affected section is purged of gas, physically disconnected and safely capped.
On completion, we confirm what has been decommissioned and, where the wider installation remains in service, that it continues to operate as expected. Documentation covering the work carried out is provided so there is a clear record for the building owner or the wider project team.
Scope of decommissioning confirmed before work begins
Purging of the affected pipework section
Safe physical disconnection and capping
Remaining installation confirmed unaffected
Documentation of the completed work provided
Sequenced around the wider refurbishment programme
Sequenced around your refurbishment, not treated as a standalone task.
Gas decommissioning is very often one task within a larger refurbishment, strip-out or change-of-use project involving several trades. We work with the main contractor or project team to sequence decommissioning at the right point in the programme, so redundant gas installations are safely out of the way before other works proceed, without disrupting parts of the building that remain in use.
Sequenced alongside a wider refurbishment or strip-out programme
Co-ordinated with main contractors and other trades
Redundant installations cleared before follow-on works begin
Remaining parts of the building kept unaffected where required
Confirmation issued to the project team on completion
Scope confirmed and agreed before work is programmed

Incredible service — problems fixed perfectly once again.
Lee, Paul and the team at COMGAS are fantastic. They arrived on time and got straight to work, quickly identifying the root cause of the plumbing and heating issues I was experiencing.
The problems were diagnosed swiftly, I was kept fully informed throughout, and both issues were fixed with impressive speed and precision.
Having worked in the industry for nearly 20 years, I know how rare it is to find reliable, trustworthy, and genuinely skilled professionals — let alone a team this good.
I joked about it at the time, but it’s true: I had the best shower I’ve ever had in this house after they finished the job — and I’ve lived here for 10 years!
I honestly couldn’t ask for more and can’t recommend COMGAS highly enough.

Gas decommissioning FAQs
Questions about commercial gas decommissioning
Common questions about safely removing redundant gas installations from service.
Decommissioning means safely purging any gas remaining in the affected pipework, physically disconnecting it, and capping the supply so the redundant installation is left in a safe condition. The exact scope is confirmed with you before work begins.
Can you decommission part of an installation while the rest stays in use?
Yes. Where only part of a building is being refurbished or changed, we identify exactly which appliances and pipework are being removed from service and confirm that the remaining installation is unaffected and continues to operate normally.
Do you provide documentation once decommissioning is complete?
Yes. We confirm what has been decommissioned and provide documentation of the work carried out, which can be passed to the building owner, the main contractor or the wider project team as required.
Can decommissioning be sequenced around a wider refurbishment project?
Yes. Decommissioning is commonly one task within a larger refurbishment or strip-out programme. We work with main contractors and other trades to sequence the work at the appropriate point, so it does not hold up or conflict with the rest of the project.
Is purging always part of a decommissioning job?
In most cases, yes — pipework being taken permanently out of service is purged of gas before it is physically disconnected and capped. See our Gas Purging page for how that stage of the process works.
Planning a refurbishment that involves redundant gas appliances or pipework?
Tell us what is being removed from service, whether it is part of a wider project, and any programme constraints. We can advise on how decommissioning fits around the rest of the works.
